Rooftop body painting with models!

It was a hot June day when my buddy Charles Mercier calls me up about his artist friend, Jessica Gorlicky. She was looking for a cool spot, preferably a rooftop, to do a body paint shooting and a photographer to shoot it. Even though I’m not specialized in fashion style photography, it sounded like an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.

L’exposition ISOtreize présente treize oeuvres colorées qui explorent dans le temps et l’espace ainsi que d’un oeil rêveur et solitaire, l’univers de l’artiste.

À travers son travail il apprend que le temps est un élément crucial de la photographie. Puis, il apprend lors de ses nombreux voyages à être patient. Il existe un moment parfait et éphémère qui jongle lumière et couleur et ce moment est la proie de sa lentille. Félix Rioux préfère imaginer un monde absolu, idyllique, un monde en paix. Un monde qui pour autant qu’il soit fragile, est aussi puissant et féroce. Les moments qu’il capture sont simples et pures. Ils représentent une infime partie d’un instant, ce sont des événements sans artifices qui ne durent…qu’un instant.

Félix Rioux utilise plusieurs procédés photographiques pour réaliser l’image recherchée. Il joue avec les techniques d’expositions longues, de filtres et de flashes pour créer un métissage des couleurs. Par contre, en travail de post-production, les différentes méthodes ne sont utilisées que de façon minimale pour laisser à l’image sa nature passagère.

Montréalais et citoyen du monde, Félix est photographe professionnel depuis 14 ans dans le domaine des sports d’action. Sa profession l’a fait voyager aux quatre coins du monde où il a développé parallèlement une passion pour les voyages, le design urbain et les grands espaces. L’eau, les montagnes, l’urbanisme et le soleil sont les thèmes principaux de sa photographie.

It’s in Phuket that we start our 3 week trip in Thailand. We stayed in Phuket Town for two days. Just enough time to get our bearings, buy ferry tickets, hang out at the local festival, enjoy nice massages and eat great Thai food!!!

C’est à Pkuket que nous avons entamé notre périple de presque trois semaines en Thailande.  Nous y avons passé 2 jours à profiter d’un festival, d’un bon massage de pieds et de la bonne bouffe Thai!!!

Hotel

We stayed at the Sino House Hotel, great  location and value for your money. Close to the heart of Phuket Town, standard rooms are 60$, including a very good breakfast (fruits, yogurt, good bread and coffee). Super clean with a safe deposit box.

The staff speaks good English and is very kind. You also get a 50% discount at the in house Raintree Spa for hôtel customers.

Nous avons séjourné au Sino House Hôtel qui était un très bon rapport qualité-prix.
Très bien situé au cœur de Phuket Town, près des centres commerciaux et une multitude de restaurant.

60$/ nuit avec petit déjeuner style buffet inclus (fruits, yogourt, bon pain et très bon café)
Personnel très sympathique et serviable (parlent bien l’anglais). Chambre belle et propre avec un coffret de sécurité
Il y a le Raintree spa affilié à l’hôtel qui offre 50% de rabais sur les massages et soins à ceux qui y logent.

Restaurant

Since we were only transitioning through Phuket Town, we didn’t plan much of our stay and freestyled much of it. There was a local festival and plenty of food carts around the center of town to pick from. One evening we went out to restaurant called The Natural. Nice decorations, food, ambiance and service but nothing extraordinary. However the price was 480 baths (12-14$) for three dishes, a big beer and an amazing apple juice♥!!!!

The Blue Elephant Restaurant was highly recommended but was fully booked when we wanted to go.

Nous avons surtout mangé dans les petits restaurants locaux et lors du festival dans les rues il y avait beaucoup de kiosque de nourriture.  Le dernier soir par contre, on voulait essayer un bon resto qui était fortement recommandé sur le web: The Naturel.  Le décor était amusant, le service sympathique et la nourriture bonne mais sans plus.  Néanmoins il s’agissait d’un bon rapport qualité-prix et ….le jus de pomme♥!!!!
On a partagé trois plats à deux + une grosse bière et un jus de pomme pour 480 baths

Le restaurant Blue Elephant nous a été fortement recommandé, mais il était complet pour notre dernière soirée.

Shopping

Looking to do some shopping? Robinson is the closest to the hotel with a 15 minutes walk. Surrounding this shopping center are many local merchants. Don’t be afraid to bargain, specialy if you’re buying more than one item you can get 30-50% discounts. There’s another popular local market called « Variety Market ». Just asked one of the taxi/scooter to take you there after 5pm.

Dans Phuket Town, il y a quelques centre commerciaux dont : Robinson (à 15 minutes à pied de notre hôtel) et Phuket….. qui ressemble vraiment à un centre d’achat en Amérique!!

Pour ceux qui préfère acheter des produits locaux et des souvenirs, près du Robinson il y a beaucoup de petites boutiques sur la rue et il y a le Variety Market pas très loin qui ouvre à 17h. (demander à un chauffeur de scooter de vous y emmener)

SPA

Our first massage in Thailand was excellent at Kim’s Massage & Spa. A 1 hour foot massage costs 300 baths (9$).  Roxanne also got exfoliated for 500 baths (not for sensitive skin ;)

Notre premier massage Thai à eu lieu dans cette ville chez Kim massage….un super massage de pieds de 60 minutes allongé sur des divans super confortable…un pur délice pour seulement 300 baths!!

J’ai aussi eu droit à une exfoliation complète du corps pendant une heure et laissez-moi vous dire que ça gratte fort…il ne faut pas avoir la peau trop sensible!!(500 baths)

Getting from Phuket to Koh Lanta

To continue onto our voyage to Koh Lanta, we must take a ferry at the Radsada Pier. The hotel staff was kind enough to arrange the shuttle pick up.

A few weeks ago, I shot a Quebec artist by the name of Antoine Gratton. I used a mixed lighting technique between the ambient light show, filters and flashes. Read my photo blog to learn more…


>Voici un blogue photo sur les images du concert et quelques techniques d’éclairage. Pour en apprendre d’avantage sur ma technique, revenez dans quelques semaines et il y aura un videoblogue

Habituellement, les photographes de concerts utilisent l’éclairage de scène pour prendre leur photo. Dans ce type de situation, il faut utiliser un ISO (sensibilité à la lumière) très élevé, entre 1600 et 2400 ISO. Cette technique à quelques points faible; le grain est souvent horrible, il y a trop de “bruits” surtout en digital et la profondeur de champ est limitée. D’accord, certaines caméras donne de très bon résultats (comme la Nikon D3 que j’ai utilisé pour ce shoot) mais je suis quand même difficile quand à la qualité de définition, grains et saturation des couleurs. J’ai donc utilisé avec et sans flashs pour ce shooting.

Most concert photographers use the stage lights show to shoot live events. To do so, you have to use a high ISO (light sensitivity), usually between 1600 and 2400 ISO. This technique has a few major downfalls; the grain can be horrible, specially with DSLRs and you get a very small depth of field. Of course many of the new cameras perform well under these circumstances (like my D3 that I used for this shoot) but I’m really picky about definition, grain and colour saturation. So, I’ve used both with and without flashes for this shoot.

Un des concerts était avec un orchestre à cordes. Cette photo illustre bien le mélange entre la lumière de scène et l’ajout de flashes. Ici j’utilise 5 flashes Nikon SB-900 avec des gels de couleurs; rouge, bleu et rose. Des Pocket Wizard font déclancher à distances mes flashs. Il y en a un sur chaque coté du balcon. Ensuite, un de chaque coté des coulisses et un dernier à coté du drummer.

This image is a good example of using both stage lights and flashes. Here I have 5 Nikon SB-900 Speedlights with coloured gels; blue, red and pink. Pocket Wizard radios set off my flashes at a distance. There’s one on each side of the balconies, one on each side of the backstages and one next to the drummer.

Au printemps dernier j’ai passé quelques jours pour un shooting avec le Team Orage à Retalack. Voici quelques unes des images préférées du voyage avec JP Auclair, Charley Ager, Michelle Parker et le reste de l’équipe…

Retalack est situé dans les montagnes Selkirk à l’intérieur de la Colombie-Britanique. L’entreprise a un très haut standard environemental et détient l’une des meilleures cote, le “Four Key Eco-rating”.

Je vous présente donc une série d’images du shoot avec le Team Orgae à Retalack. Le temps était parfait et restait encore de la bonne poudreuse à skier en fin de saison. N’oublier pas de regarder la vidéo à la toute fin de ce blogue photo!

Our month long trip to Asia started with a quick 3 day stop in Shanghai. This south of China city is a blend of traditional and modern oriental culture with occidental influence from the past century or so of imperialism. The architecture and lifestyle of its inhabitants is quite fascinating… and here the expression “its all Chinese” takes all its meaning.

C’est avec un arrêt rapide de 3 jours à Shanghai qu’a débuté notre périple d’un mois en Asie.  Cette ville du sud est de la Chine est un réel mélange des cultures traditionnelle et moderne et occidental et oriental; plutôt fascinante de par son architecture et le mode de vie de ses habitants. Et je peux vous dire qu’une fois sur place, l’expression ‘’c’est du chinois’’ prend tout son sens….

Hotel / Hôtel
We stayed at the Manhattan Bund Business Hotel, very nice for the price and location;
50$cdn per night (booked through Expedia), 2 minutes from the Bund district. Very clean rooms but the heating wasn’t always optimal. Breakfast at 40rmb/6$ per person (48rmb if you don’t book the day before)

Nous avons logé au Manhattan Bund business hôtel qui était très bien vu son prix et sa location…. 50$cdn par nuit, à deux minutes du Bund et les chambres sont très propre mais le chauffage pas toujours fiable. Déjeuner à 40 rmb/6$ personne (48rmb si on ne réserve pas la veille).

Restaurants
Finding a restaurant is not an easy task, not many people speak English and all signs and menus are in Mandarin or local dialects. So you don’t always know what’s in your plate and sometimes its better like that. The Chinese mainly eat for breakfast rice and dried fish, so if you feel like something a bit more occidental there’s a chain of cafes called 85c. It’s a great pastry & bakery place for those who need something sweet and a coffee. (between 8 & 15 CNY for a coffee and cheaper for pastries).
♥ French Donut… Miam miam

It took us a while but we found the best dumpling restaurant in Shanghai…
Jia Jia Tang Bao at about 25 minutes walk from our hotel. It’s totally worth the walk (see Map).

♥Pork dumplings are 9rmb, pork and crab 22,50rmb and crab 96rmb (price for a dozen).
Keep some extra room, the restaurant right in front does excellent fried dumplings.

Trouver un bon restaurant n’est pas tâche facile dû au fait que les gens ne parlent pas vraiment anglais et les menus sont écrit en chinois…donc on ne sait pas toujours ce qui se trouve dans notre assiette et croyez-moi parfois il serait préférable de ne pas savoir!!!
Pour le matin, il ya le 85c qui est en fait une boulangerie/ pâtisserie très bien surtout lorsqu’on a le bec sucré et envie d’un bon café (entre 8 et 15 rmb pour un café et moins cher pour les pâtisseries). On retrouve des 85c à tout les 5-6 coins de rues…
♥ French donut… mium mium

Après maintes recherches, nous avons finalement trouvé la meilleure place de dumpling à Shanghai….
Jia jia tang bao est à environ 25 minutes de marche de notre hôtel et ça vaut vraiment le déplacement.
♥Dumpling au porc 9 rmb…Porc et crabe 22,50rmb…Crabe 96 rmb (Prix à la douzaine)

The Bund
Nanjiing Road is a very commercial pedestrian street (main portion) for those who love shopping. I’m not a big shopper so not much tips here. There’s great view of Pudong by the waterway. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing from here.

Nanjiing Road est une rue vraiment commerciale comme on en retrouve dans toutes les grandes villes et achalandé pour les amateurs de shopping… Depuis le bord de l’eau il y a une vue magnifique sur Pudong et il ne faut surtout pas manquer le levé et le couché du soleil qui sont très impressionnant.

Not far off Nanjiing Road, you can find little shops selling more traditional Chinese items.

Pudong
Pudong is he newly constructed financial district in Shanghai, very modern and futuristic. If you’re a sci-fy fan and have seen Ultrviolet, then that’s where many scenes was filmed. You can access it via a tourist tunnel complete with sound and light shows. The cost is about 170rmb to go across, otherwise just take the subway system, much cheaper.

Pour se rendre du Bund a Pudong, il existe un tunnel à touriste avec des effets de son et de lumière ….au coût d’environ 170 rmb.
Le quartier financier et très occidentalisé; l’architecture y est de style futuriste dont plusieurs édifice sont vedettes dans des films de science-fiction tel « Ultraviolet ». Oriental Pearl Tower une tour s’élevant à 468m (1,535 pieds). Ça coûte entre 15$ et 30$, selon la hauteur a laquelle on veut se rendre.

We visited the Shanghai Aquarium for a couple hours. Great place to learn about marine life and stay out of the cold weather… (170rmb per person)

Nous avons passé une matinée à L’aquarium de Shanghai qui est un bon endroit à la fois pour s’instruire sur l’univers marin et se réchauffer. (170 rmb/personne)

Old Town
Just like the name says, it’s the old part of town, poor and rustic. Local markets are along the narrow streets and have everything you can expect, even chickens getting gutted live. Housing is extremely small and basic, the inhabitants use the street as their kitchen or extra living room to do their choirs. Comme le nom le dit, cette partie de la ville est plutôt rustique et très pauvre, les derniers vestiges de la vieille Shanghai du Peuple.  Les marchés alimentaire abondent les rue de la ville et on peut même voir la volaille se faire tuer en direct!! Les habitants vivent dans d’étroites maisons et mal isolé, ils sont toujours à l’extérieur de leur demeure à exécuter des tâches ménagère….d’ailleurs, il y a des cordes à linge en abondance partout dans les rues…

Huangpu
Huangpu is another local neighborhood that doesn’t get much tourist traffic. It has plenty of life and outdoor markets to check out.

Un autre quartier pauvre mais très vivant, il vois très peu de trafique touristique. Nous y avons passé seulement 2-3 heures à travers les rues résidentielles et marchés extérieur.

Warning for the faint of heart… It’s not uncommon to walk around and see the Chinese burp, fart and spit loudly in public… its simply part of the culture and they make no excuse for it. I think they may actually find it funny how some tourist react Otherwise, they can be very friendly and smile a lot, even more so in the local and poor parts of town.

Avis aux dédaigneux…il n’est pas rare de se promener et de surprendre un chinois à cracher, roter ou même péter en public et sans malaise…ça fait partie de leur culture. Ils sont très gentils et souriant dans les cartiers populaire mais n’essaient pas trop d’engager une conversation, très peu parlent anglais.

Safety / Sécurité
We were in China for only 3 days and never felt unsecure or intimidated in any way. They’re not a violent people but it doesn’t mean you have to let up you guard. As a tourist, you’re always a target for some scheme to get money out of your pockets. You’ll never be threaten but you have to be street wise.

Here’s a little scam anecdote that happened to us;
Two strangers, apparently from Beijing, walking around Shanghai as tourists themselves, started a conversation with us. Their English was oddly very good compared to what we had experienced the past couple days. After a long discussion they invite us to go enjoy a “traditional tea tasting experience”. The experience was apparently a delicacy from a Chinese minority from a southern part of China, funny enough the tea house was across the street. Once there, we feel strangely uncomfortable, a very small place with little rooms. The waitress, dressed in traditional clothes, only spoke to us in Chinese while the others translated. It costs between 4-6$ per cup (barely 1oz), per person and the “experience” had over a dozen types of tea. It took me a couple of minutes to realize we were getting scammed, so we got up and left. Be warned about this type of over priced tea scam.

Durant notre séjour,  jamais on ne s’est senti menacé ou intimidé par qui que ce soit, ils on une attitude sans agressivité ou violence. Ça ne veut pas dire qu’il ne faut pas faire attention. En tant que touriste nous somme toujours vulnérable aux arnaques et il faut rester malin.

Voici une petite arnaque qui nous est presque arrivée;
Deux inconnus apparement originaire de Beijing, très sympathique et parlant beaucoup trop bien l’anglais, nous on abordé dans la rue.  Après une longue discussion sympathique, ils nous invitent à une dégustation de thé qui prend place de l’autre côté de la rue (quel adon!).
Une fois arrivé, on nous installe dans une petite salle fermé et très isolé, une jeune chinoise vêtu d un habit traditionnel commence à nous expliquer (en chinois) les différentes sortes de thé qu’il faut ensuite choisir et qui coûte en moyenne de 4$ à 6$ la gorgé……comme nous n’avons plus d’argent comptant ils nous proposent de payer crédit….et c’est à ce moment que Félix me dit: ok go on part maintenant…on est en train de se faire arnaquer!!!!
Méfiez-vous…

Transport / Déplacements

Subway:
It’s simple, efficient and cheap. Directions are well indicated in written and spoken English. The cost is about 1$.

How to go to and from the airport:
We took a taxi when we first arrived in Shanghai (around 170rmb) and took 45minutes. It was the easiest after a long flight and not knowing exactly where to go but the return was very easy taking the subway. It’s only 7rmb from the Nanjiing Road station and 50-60 minutes.

IMPORTANT: Although on the same line, you have to transfer at the Juanglan Road station for all travels before 9pm. The transfer is easier, on the same dock as where you disembark.

Getting around the city:
In Shanghai, most people travel on a bike, motorcycle or car and the highway code is almost non existent. Everyone looks in front of them but not sideways, very chaotic but seems to work for them. We recommend walking or taking the subway.

Le métro:
Simple, efficace, rapide et économique (environ 1$).  Les indications vocales et écrites sont claires et en anglais.

Aéroport:
Depuis l’aéroport de Pudong, nous avons pris un taxi jusqu’a notre hôtel (pour 170 rmb et 45 min) ne sachant pas vraiment où nous allions, mais pour le retour il est préférable  pour le budget de prendre le métro (7 rmb/ personne 50-60 min a partir de la station Nanjiing Road).

Important : il faut effectuer un transfert à la station Juanglan Road et ce pour les trajets avant 21h (changement dans le wagon juste en face sur le même quai).

Dans la ville:
À Shanghai, la plupart des gens se promènent en vélo ou en mobilette même lorsqu’il fait froid.  Ceux qui sont en voitures sont plus fortunés mais la marche et le metro est notre transport de choix.
Le code de la route n’est pas respecté et tout le monde roule en regardant droit devant et non sur les côté….mais étrangement ça fonctionne!!

Note: It was very, very hard to find a map of the City. No one could help us find one either, even in the Tourism Offices, they didn’t speak English nor had a map… weird.

Note: Il était très difficile de trouver une carte de la ville. Les bureaux de Toursime en avais pas et même qu’ils ne parlais pas anglais et semblais dérangé par notre présence… bizarre. On a finalement trouvé une carte au Musé de Shanghai pour la modique somme de 70rmb/12$ lol. Practical information / Infos Pratique
Depending on where you are from, this may vary… Leaving from Canada you’ll need a visa for the length of your stay. Here’s a few ways do to so;

• Go directly to the Chinese Consul (the closest to Montreal is Ottawa).
• A travel agency specialized in travels to Asia.
• We used the “Chinese Visa Service Center” in Chinatown. They take your photo (5$) and submit the demand for you (passport and forms), the service charge and Visa costs are 80$. (Plenty other companies offer the same service)

Pour un départ en Chine à partir du Canada, il ne faut surtout pas oublier de faire un visa pour la durée du séjour.  Il y a quelques façons de faire:

• Se rendre directement a un consulat chinois (pas à Montréal, le plus près est à Ottawa)
• Une agence de voyage.
• Nous avons fait affaire avec Chinese visa service centre* dans le quartier chinois qui s’occupe de prendre notre photo (5$) et de se rendre au consulat avec nos documents (passeport, formulaire) pour la somme de 80$. (À noter qu’il existe d’autre compagnie offrant le même service)

Jean-Sebastien invited us to do the shoot in his home town of Acton Vale, Quebec. As luck would have it, it was one of the last beautiful, sunny and warm day of the fall. We got started with a quick portrait of JSR behind his grand-mother’s farm in Acton Vale.

It was now time to get some action sports photography and head to the dirt track. For the occasion, I’m using the Nikon SU-800 Commander. It’s an amazing tool for synchronizing your flashes with a high-speed shutter, that action sports require. With most DSLRs, you can’t sync flashes with your shutter at a greater speed than 1/250th. When shooting in low light, it can work fine but you get motion blur when in daylight.

The SU-800 allows you to sync at any shutter speed. Many restrictions apply but when the set up is right, it makes amazing results. The SU-800 is capable of metering and triggering up to 3 groups of remote Speedlights, mainly the SB-800 and SB-900. Each group; A, B and C can control an infinite number of Speedlights.

The technical restrictions are;
-The SU-800 Commander sends out a infrared beam and has to be within a 20-30 feet range of the Speedlights. Then the infrared captor on the side of the Speedlight has to face the Commander.
-Nothing can be blocking the beam between Commander and Speedlight.
-The width of the beam has its limitations, I’m not sure of the exact degree angle but its something around 120 degrees.

Here’s I’m setting up 3 SB-900 on a FourSquare rig. It usually allows for 4 Speedlights but 3 will do from this angle. FourSquare makes cool stuff for those shooting a lot with multiple Speedlights. Check out their products right here: FourSquare

Using the SU-800 with my Speedlights gives me the opportunity to shoot at 1/2000th of a second or more, use the sun as a backlight and light up where normally it would be dark with the flashes.

I didn’t use any Speedlights for this last image, instead relying on the good ‘old method of bouncing sunlight off a light disk…
